Default Lighting

I have kept a saltwater tank for about 9 years and have decided to venture into a reef.
I am somewhat confused about the lighting and the cost.
The guys at the local stores have given me conflicting advice.
One guy told me for my tank I need to spend aprox. $800 to $900 for Metal Halide lighting. He also told me not to get anything less, as it would not be sufficent to keep the corals. Another guy showed me some lighting that would cost about a third of what the first guy told me.
I need some advice from someone who is not looking to sell me something.
I have a 75 gallon tank , can someone help me suggestions for lighting for my tank?

If you want keep hard corals, like SPS, metal halide lighting is the way to go. If you want to keep soft corlas then you can get flourscent lighting and that will work just fine. Normally you can order lighting online and save 30-45% versus buying thru a store.

I need to know more info on the lighting. How much lighting...watts do I need for a 75 gallon tank? Is there a formula? If you can pass on some info or refer me somewhere to help with this it would be deeply appreciated.
