Default Replacing Bio-balls With Lr Rubble

i read a posting from GLAMPKA that suggested replacing the bio-balls in my 29gal bio-cube with LR rubble because bio-balls become a nitrate factory. what does everyone else think about that?? sounds reasonable and if so, do you just yank out the bio-balls and go grab a aquacultured LR and just break it up into pieces(how big?) and dump them into the filter section and let nature take its course?? i am trying to get my tank under control. i rushed it a bit, have paid the consequences, and learned some valuable lessons. also, if anyone has any suggestions on how to keep my fish from committing suicide by jumping from the tank over the back wall and into the back section?? have lost 3 fish because they jumped into the section above the bio-balls where there was lil water. my clown jumped into the section with the pump(saved him) and my green goby jumped into the skimmer section(saved him). any suggestions would be helpful. expect some pics soon.

ps...what the heck are those anenome looking things coming off the live rock? they are brownish in color with lots of tentacles coming off the tubular body? they remind me of something from that movie DEEP RISING!! i had to stab one to death that looked like it was killing my xenia.

Do you have a pix of them? Could be Aiptasia, which you want to get rid of.

i dont think they are trying to escape its just that the water level is level with the wall between the tank and the filter system. its easy for them to just swim to the top looking for food and almost floating over the top or popping to the surface and falling over. i was thinking maybe putting a piece of plastic or maybe some of that plastic egg crate used in overhead flouresent lighting fixtures.

on another subject...whats a good coral to put on some live rock closer to the top of the tank, something that is gonna need and like alot of light??? i have some bare spots i would like to fill in.

On another forum some place I saw a thread about fish jumping in cubes. To solve the problem, get a strip of that plastic material used on glass tank covers & use that as a shield along the back edge. You'll have to cut it down a bit to get it to fit. Ill post the thread if I can find it again.
I solved the problem by installing 1 of those electric dog fences & putting collars on my jumpers. One zap & that puts them in their place!!! lol

lol, that was a good one. i have a barking collar for my dog...i love that invention, now he just growls. as for fish jumping out of the tank..i solved that problem over the weekend with a piece of that white plastic light diffuser. i got the guy from the LFS to grab me a free scrap piece, it was the perfect size..just slid it over top the pump and bio-ball area and it sits over top the actual fishtank about 3 inches and the hood pushes down on it and holds it in place. perfecto!! if they want to jump into the skimmer return, they are more than free to, there is plenty of water in there and i will eventually notice them missing and snatch them out. my green clown goby wound up back there over the weekend, found him and returned him to the tank. unfortunately, he got ich and ended up being hermit crab food. yum yum give me some.
