Default Refugium Question

We're setting up a whole new tank, so I'm researching and reading. I just read the RB May Newsletter. It made me think of something. Since we're just starting, a sump is about as far as I can handle for now.

But it occurred to me - when I get my sea legs (so to speak, and sorry for the bad pun - I couldn't help it...), I can consider getting a small tank and put it after my sump and protein skimmer, and route the water into the new tank, and then back up to the main tank, can't I? Wouldn't this act as a refugium and let me grow the appropriate life in there and still be post-filter, and pre-main-tank?

From my limited experience, while this isn't as efficient as designing a refugium setup from the start - something I think is maybe a reach for me right now - this may be a good way to adapt later without giving much up?

Thoughts?

Simple Refugium Build Design:

very good and easy should not cost much as well. You may want to go to a 30G long though for your system. sorry it took so long to get to this post I was trying to post at 5 pm then some how I got distracted!

I saw this one in a post of yours from yesterday. Some really interesting stuff and plenty of DIY info. I bookmarked it and printed some of the pages. Amazing how many DIY sites are out there - it makes me wish I had more time for building some things instead of buying.
