Sounds like algae...diatoms. Not related to the star. How long has your tank been up and running and how long have you had the star?

My tank has only been up for right at 2 months, we have been useing a coraline accelerator so there is very little algea. The starfish have been in for over 2 weeks in that time period, and until two days ago there were no fuzzy spot like algea in our tank. we also have a red tree sponge.

I'm guessing it is just algae. It happens.

My algae spots have been quick to form. Even after cleaning the glass, the spots start back within a couple of days. I bought snails for it, can't say that they are doing much but the water changes should help it out in time.
