Default Calcium Reactor

I am getting closer to getting my 90 gallon tank reef system. Due to the cost I will have to purchase the equipment slowly. When I have everything I will be in 7th heaven getting it up and running. My question is about a calcium reactor. Is it a good idea to get on from the very start? Mixing limewater and useing it with my daily top off water seem like a pain. I would have to have a batch always on hand. Please advise?

Default Re: Calcium Reactor

I wouldn't worry about setting up a calcium reactor right away. A tank needs to have a lot of hard corals in it before it is worthwhile. At the beginning, you need to wait for the tank to cycle, then purchase your fish and corals and wait for them to grow large enough that they use enough calcium to make it a worthwhile investment. Also, since SPS corals are harder to keep, most people try not to add too many of them until the tank is well established. If this is your first reef tank, you may want to shy away from SPS for a while so you get the hang of keeping a reef tank with easier to keep corals and without the SPS, you shouldn't need a calcium reactor.
