Default Hair Algae

I Am Getting A Really Good Case Of Greem Algae. I Think It Is Hair Algae. How Do You Get Rid Of It. My Fish Store Sold Me A Rabbit Fish Last Week, Said This Would Take Care Of It. All My Test Are Good. I Also Need To Know The Easiest Way To Clean The Glass. Lots Of Algae Growing Next To The Sand And In Places I Can Not Reach. What Do Other People Use To Clean Their Glass. I Do Not Like Putting My Hand In The Glass Everyday To Use A Razor Blade But My Aquarium Is Really Starting To Look Really Ugly. My Aquarium Has Been Up For About 4 Months.

Thanks
Andy W.

What do you have in your tank now? I got two emerald crabs for my 75 gallon and they finished off almost all of my hair algae in about a week and a half. I was told that a yellow tang will also eat hair algae. I don't have one so I can't say for sure.

For cleaning the glass, a Mag Float works good.

As far as the hair algae goes, the main causes of hair algae are old light bulbs or poor water quallity. Have you tested your water for nitrates and phosphates recently? Do you use tap water or RO/DI water? How much/often do you feed? Knowing the source of the problem is a better way to figure out what the best method to get rid of the hair algae is. Possible ways to help get rid of hair algae include minimizing feedings, using RO/DI water, having a good skimmer and not using canister filters, having a good cleanup crew and/or fish that eat algae, and hand picking it. Most fish/critters that eat hair algae only eat short algae and not the longer strands. Before I'll recommend any specific fish, you need to provide what size of tank you have and what fish you currently have in it.

Thanks For Trying To Help. My Tank Is About 4.5 Months Old. I Have A 38 Gallon Tall Tank. I Purchased New A 130 Watt Orbit Compact Florescence Light, A Rena Sp2 Fillstar Canister Filter And A Red Sea Prizm Skimmer. I Have 15 Hermit Crabs And 5 Turban Snails. I Have 4 Pulsating Zennia, 4 Different Color Mushrooms And One Zoo. I Had A Yellow Polop But It Seems To Have Died, I Was Told This Is The Easiest To Have.
I Have About 4" Of Sand With 25 Pounds Of Live Rock And 15 Pounds Of Flat Rock. I Only Have On Fish And This Is A Rabbit Bought Last Week, Was Told It Would Eat The Hair Algae. I Cycled My Tank With Mollies And Then Added A Lavender Tang, Got The Ick And They All Died, That Was 7 Weeks Ago. I Waited 6 Weeks Before Buying The Rabbit Fish Hoping The Ick Is Gone. I Have Not Been Feeding At All During This Time, Nothing To Feed.
I Tested My Water Tonight And All Is Good. No Nitrates Or Nitrites, Ph Is 8.4 My Alkalinty Is Over 300. I Use B-ionic Calcium Buffer Each Day And This May Be The Reason The Alkalinity Is High, I Do Not Know. I Tested For Phosphates And That Is Good Also.
I Do Water Changes Every 2 Weeks And Also Buy My Water At The Fish Store Already Made Up. I Also Buy The Ro Water At The Same Fish Store To Top The Tank Off.
I Have A Problem With Rust Looking Things All Over My Rocks And Glass, They Are Easy To Blow Off With The Turkey Baster But Come Back Overnight. I Also Have Egg Looking Things On My Back Glass. They Are Somewhat Hard And Almost Look Jelly Like.
Hope With This Info You Can Get My On The Right Track. I Live In A Rural Area And No One Seems To Know Much About Salt Water Tanks.

Thanks
Andy W

The rust colored stuff could be diatoms. Those are part of the cycling process.

What do you use for a filter? I also reccommend one of the magnetic algae scrapers to keep your glass clean.

Bristletooth Tangs and some of the other species of tang eat hair algae. My lawnmower blenny also eats the algae off the glass.
