dont ever use tap water for sw tank. if your not going to go get a ro\di unit go to a petsmart and get the tapwater filter. not one from a hardware store either. do alot of research before jumping into sw. if interestedthere is a local site i go to also called manhattenreefs.com alot of info and local people for you and store locations

#1 RO.DI unit

#2 sound's like algae from tap useing tap water

#3 fish and coral's are not cheap...If you want a deal buy them from here Saltwaterfish.com - Saltwater Fish, Saltwater Fish Aquariums, Tropical Fish, and Saltwater Fish Tanks

#4 Nitrate is not a bad thing as long as it stay's under 20ppm...A deep sand bed for say 4"/6" DEEP will help lower nitrate's...or weekly water change's with ro water!

Reef's are not cheap....220 gallon reef run's around $20 thousand, and that's the low side.
Good Luck
