Calcium would not have killed your fish in this case.
i am leaning toward a condition that happens at night time. Due to depleted oxygenated water Tangs will succumb to a low oxygen content in the water. Make sure you are aerating your water well? What kind of skimmer do you use?
Also how long have you had this tang for?
