Default sandsifting starfish

my sandsifting starfish lost one of his leg, tentacle whatever its called, he's still looking healthy and moving around, is this normal?

Don't worry, his leg will grow back. My question/concern is, how big is your tank? Unless you have a tank of considerable size(90g+) and/or deep sand bed(4+ inches) your starfish will slowly starve to death over a few months to a year. On top of that, the "sand-sifters" eat up all your beneficial microorganisms that break down your poop and uneaten food out of the sand and leave your sand barren after that, compromising your tank as a whole. Hm, I've been having mucho problems with my sandsifting stars...

My tank is 55 gallons, but the sand is easily 4 inches deep. Is that still not enough? That would explain a lot if it wasnt
