Default jimw369 out of town...I have a ?

Hi Everyone! Jim has been out of town for a week and Will not be back till next weekend. I ( his daughter) have the distinct privledge of taking care of our reef tank. I have just informed him of all the water parameters and everything seems great! The one thing I wanted to know was is there a way to raise the Kh? if so, how? Thank you!

If Jim has a two part solution around like b-ionic or kent tech cb, you'd dose 20-25ML of the alkalinty solution every other day, be sure to keep testing 24hrs after dosing though !!!

I think shes referring to the dKH aka alkalinity, most test kits refer to it as KH.

I think its very cool of her to take care of Jim's tank !!!

I know what KH is, I wanted to know how low it was, Keith. She might not need to use a 2 part solution for just KH.

Thank you all for your help. Im new to this myself..but according to our chart the dKH reads 6...or ppmKH/GH 107.4. Thank you again for any help. And for those wondering, Jim has gone to FL for a couple weeks and should return by next friday!

6?!? That is low.
Is his calcium low as well?
At any rate, you are going to need to buffer. If his calcium is doing OK anywhere above 400-450, I would check if he has a buffer strictly for alkalinity in his stand or whatnot. If his calcium is on the lower end, I would suggest using what Krazy K was talking about Kent's Tech CB parts A & B. You can probably find it at Petsmart if you do not have a saltwater store nearby that carries it. It should be applied in the morning.

How could your dad leave you with a mess???? I will have to talk to him!

His calcium is just fine. I would just buffer for alkalinity if you can find the buffer in his house. wait 24 hours or whatever the bottle suggests and then do it again. Oh and keep testing!

Good luck!!

unfortunatly all 3 lfs around us do not have or carry the alkalinity buffer....BUT...I have ordered it online and It should arrive Tuesday. Its the best I could do. With a 14 gallon biocube myself, this is a learning process. I do not want anything to go wrong with His reef tank, nor will he be upset if something does. Its all part of the process. THank you all again for your help and advice!

You better take good care of his TBs when he's gone - don't want him to come home & find out they died!!!

I'd just test again and double check it..

Seems very odd for the dKH to be that low when the calcium is at a good level..

I'm not saying it cant happen, just seems a bit weird...

its a learning process for sure all right !!!

Thanks everybody!!!! Im stuck in Orlando in 100+ heat and have not even been able to use my laptop to keep up with things cause this hotels wireless service stinks. Sooo...I am at kinkos. Yes Kinkos. 20 cents a friggen minute.

Thanks for giving my daughter all the help I am calling her tonight to see how shes making out.

And just for the record. If EVERYTHING in my tank died tomorrow it would be filled with new water and rock and I would do it all over again! I could do a much better job the second time. I think my daughter has it under control.

Thanks all you Reef Builders!!!!
