Default Clams!!!

Soooooooo...130 watt power compact over 20 gallons of water, 16 inches deep. I know, I know, maximas and croceas are a no, but will a derasa do ok? I would wait till my system is nice and stable, and supplement micro-plankton. Also I would fill a shallow clam shell with sand and glue it to a tonga branch to I could raise the clam closer to the light (about 8" away). but still give it a sand bed. Whadda you think, Ive heard from some not to do it, ive heard a few say that even maximas can live under stock nano-cube lighting (i really doubt that).

Hello
I would not go down the sand filled shell way because if the clam did'nt like the position it was placed in it will not settle there and not attach it's byssal strands therefore there would be a chance it would get stressed or topple of and damage itself.
You should be ok with the lighting you have to start it of on the sand bed if you have one.If not build up some living rock and place it in a little crevice but not to tight that it affects it's opening and closing. If you have any trouble let us know
Ollie

I've known many that have kept clams, even croceas and maximas under stock NC lighting... You'd be doing alot better if you could throw some T5's over it though...

Hello all - new to this forum.

I was considering getting a clam also for my 36gal. I have 130W of PC and 24W of t5. do you think this will be sufficient - if so what type of clams are the best to start with? I have been told Derasa clams are best.

You should be fine, especially with the T5's if it's got parabolic reflectors... As far as what kind, Derasa's get big and they can get big quick... Mine is about 6-7 inches long, but he's got room to grow in my 180... They have been known to double their size in a year...
