Default substrate from the wild?

Hey guys! Just in the planning stages of beginning a new aquarium and I am quite new to this..... I live in South Florida and love to fish and dive which got me wondering is there anything I can use from my own backyard so to speak? Is the sand off the reefs I dive in 50ft "live" sand? I might sound silly but I'm not sure. I would like to use as many local components for my tank as possible. Any info on this would be awesome. Chad

Yes it is considered live. One thing to consider first and foremost is that pollutants my not be present in the water but will stay in the sand for a long while. I am not sure about Florida, but California has some of the most polluted beaches and would never use local sand.

I am sure there is a shoal somewhere offshore to get all the sand you want, and maybe even some live rock. However it might be illegal to collect it.Around mid november you can send me three 5 gallon buckets full lol.

I'm a diver too. I used the live sand from my own backyard. No problems here. The fish and inverts are from my own backyard too.
