Its a terrible addiction to bubble columns I have, I build bigger and bigger skimmers, i dont need them I just cant stop really Ive got like 6 or7 in the garage, I need help, I look at fish and coral as suppliers of my skimmer, necessary but not really wanted, oh I should warn you I exaggerate a wee bit but I do have 7 skimmers plus a few I bought lol

For me it's the challenge. There is so much to learn but the rewards are well worth the headaches

For me, it's two things: 1) the ever-learning process for many of the things noted above; and 2) because everytime I look at my tank, no matter what part of it, there is something new, from algae of all kinds to pods of all types to corals of all shapes to fish of all colors (and to bubbles of all sizes).

I always thought chicks dug scars...?

This is a tough question. I was never really a fish person. I like them OK, but the management...no way. I thought saltwater was going to be more difficult than it is worth. Still do, at least that is what my bank account suggests. But once the system is up and running and you actually get something to survive and something to build around, it's pretty cool. My kid loves it, too, and that cannot be all bad.

It all started for me when the kids came home with some goldfish they got from a birthday party. Of course we had to get them a 10 gallon tank... but dad wanted his own tank. So off to the lfs I went...but the fresh water fish looked so dull compared to those saltwater ones ! So 3 years later and a couple of grand lighter(in the pocket), I have a little piece of the ocean. I come home from a long day of work and just kick it in front of my 55 (soon to be 75) and all is okay. Not to mention...when folks come over and comment: "Is that real ?" or "That is soooo cool ! "The best are kids reactions that we have "nemo" in our living room.

I have had many aquariums over the past 7 years, mostly FW, then tried a SW ten to see if I could do it...I did, then got deployed so it came down. Long story short I got a heck-of-a deal on a 72 gallon bow front in June and slowly over the summer as the budget allowed built my realm, my wife griped and moaned about the expense of it all...until it came time to finally put fish in there. She wants this and that and a "Nemo" and a "Dori". Well happy to say I have a few fish in it now and she (and the cat) and I just love watching the aquarium...it's just so fascinating. I get up and look at it and still can't believe that I have this micro-ecosystem in my home. It's incredible.

For me it is very spiritual. I stare at my tank and meditate on my responsibility for the life I have brought into my home. Their very existence is dependent on me making the right decisions and being ever vigilant of their environment. It has brought greater understanding to me about how fragile the environment we live in is. After awhile it is like being a parent only more so because my creatures can't tell me where it hurts.

I too have always loved fish, both FW and SW recently. But i like the challenge and delicate balance that all of the inhabitants have with one another. Being an Environmental chemist for the state of MD only builds upon that. Each time I think that I have it all figured out and am happy with my accomplishment, I see something else or hear about something someone else is doing and I get excited like its the first time all over again. And chicks most definitely dig bright colors and pretty fish.
