Default Live Rock Cotton Balls?

Ok, I have had these little things popping up all over the place since I set up my tank, and so fare no one can tell me what they are. They look like little cotton balls with a little funnel shaped cone on the ends. They keep showing up over night all over the place and in a week or so all traces of them are gone, but more keep showing up. I dont know if something is hatching out of them or if the fish, urchin, or crabs are getting them. Please let me know if you know what they might be. Thanks

IMO it looks like a calcareous sponge. They don't hurt anything and will come and go as the nutrients in your tank change.

Well from what I have read and seen I dont think they are calcareous sponges. Mine have funnel shaped crown like a feather duster, and have a pin hole through the center of them.

There's another thread called 'ok, yet another odd creature' with pictures on this site. The picture looks a lot like your picture. Sorry, I don't know how to add the link for you but maybe you can find it? I had the same thing for about 3 days and then they just disappeared, I don't know if one of the fish ate it or what but everything is still fine. I only noticed them before I had a sump and refugium. If you figure out what it is and what causes it, let us know.

Ok, I will keep you all posted if I find out anything out off of RB. I have hundreds of them, and have no clue what they are. I have a 30g fuge and a 75g tank. I have had it all up and running for about 2 months, and they have been their since the beginning. It started out with a few, but they spread, then all at once they will be gone, then the next day several new ones pop up. At this point I am seeing more every day.

Yes, those are the same thing as I, and everyone else has. What are they though? Evan, (Siredmund) never got an answer for sure what they were either.

Yes, they are pineapple or Sycon Sponges. It is a growth in your tank that some believe comes from overfeeding.

Yes, that looks like them only they are white, not tan as they look on google. Thanks

Ok, I did find more info and this is what they are. They seem to just be little live water filters from what I have read and dont hurt a thing. Thanks all.
