How vital is one of these and is it easy to diy?

It's pretty easy to do. You don't "have" to have a refuge, but it make keeping a saltwater tank a whole lot easier!

Fairly easy to build, especially if you're already using a sump... As far as necessity, it should cut down your nitrates drastically... I have never been able to detect nitrates when I test my 180 and I'm only running about a 10 gal fuge, low to no nitrates is crucial if you plan on keeping any SPS corals...
