Default Sand Sifting Star Fish... What do they eat?

I had assumed that star fish are carnivorous. This last week I was told sand sifters only eat algae. Does anyone know? They do a great job turning the sand, highly recommended.

They eat things in the sand, usually a combination of pods and other living things in your live sand. The problem with sand sifting sea stars is that they need new fresh live sand otherwise they will starve to death unless you supplement with other foods.

I have had a sand sifting star in my tank. I never feed it anything and it only lasted for about 8 months. I am guessing that it eventually starved to death. The only negative to these stars is that you never see them because they are always buried in the substrate.
