Default Problems with the tank and I can't figure it out.

Hey everyone,

I have been in the hobby for several years and i cannot seem to figure out what is going on. I have a 40 gl reef with 220w of compact flourescent. I dose clacium regularly and other trace elements. All the sudden i started losing some fish and crabs. Chemistry in the water is superb. corals seem fine. The only thing that i have done recently is about 3 weeks ago i added some new rock to the tank. I thought maybe the rock that i bought was just not cured. But then that would have shown signs of nitrates and nitrites. Can anyone suggest or have any clue whats going on.

thanks
Dave

We dont get to talk much about older or mature tanks here. One of the most interesting things that happen to older tank is "old tank syndrome".The sand bed goes "stale",the chemistry get irratic, the water doesnt look so clean and fish become lethargic and some die. This all sounds so terrible but its very easy to cure.Get one of those sand bed rejuvinators like garf grundge and add it to your sand( bury it in the sand because this stuff is UGLY lol).Move your rock around to a different aquascape.Change the flow in the tank and maybe even add a power head. And if you dont already, use a little carbon filtration for a while. You wont believe the difference it will make.I cant say for sure this is the problem you are having and even if its not what I suggest is a good thing to do.
