Default High Temp

My temp has been between 80-83, which is pretty high. I dont have a heater so I think it must be my pump. Any suggestions or ideas? Those chillers are super expensive.

What pump are you running? How are you running it - submersed or in-line? You might want to get a clip on fan to blow across the top of the tank. Do you have a glass cover?

I wouldn't worry too much about 83 degrees as long as it's consistant. Temp swings are worse than steady temps that are slightly high. I wouldn't want the temps over 85 though. Natural reefs have 85° water temps depending on the season.

You might try switching pumps. I've got a much smaller system, but I dropped 3 degrees by switching to a more efficient pump, and got increased flow too!

I had some pretty high temps and did the following - FANS on top of the tank under the lights, just the small square compter fans work great. I have an acrylic tank that has 3 large cut outs on top (lots of evaporation too!) If you have a glass cover I have heard recommendations that you remove it if possible. EXTERNAL PUMPS - I removed my SEIO's and replaced with Ecotech, yeah a pricey item, but chillers are a lot more $$$. With those two things my temp dropped from around 86 to at one point 70 - (Weather changed also, but this is So Cal - how much weather do we really have!!) So now I have a heater (and it's holding pretty steady)... You can also try raising your lights a few inches - that might help...

If you look at that" live reef "site you will the water temp is around 84 most of the time and that camera is 45 feet down the side of the reef. The weather down there has been mostly to partly cloudy for almost a month and its still that warm.

Not sure exact name of pump (I need to check, at work atm) its inline. I plan on putting a fan in the canopy but after the lights being off for 8+ hours the temp is 81.5. I have a acrylic top with two holes in it.

Here you can see my pump:

I was thinking of placing a fan to blow on the pump? Will that help?

So steady 80-83 is good for my soon to be reef and fish?

Fans will help, but I run my tank in that range and have no ill effects. Stability is more important than a particular temp...as long as it is in the range of 75-85 you'll be ok most of the time.

I agree with Brian about the temp swings. I have been watching that live reef for a few weeks now pay particular attention to the temp on the top of the screen. The temp there has been as low as 78 and as high as 86 without any reduction in activity on the reef.Just from this observation I would make that bottom #78 instead of 75.Remember the one difference between your tank and a reef.On a reef if a fish doesnt like the temp where it is he can move, deeper to get cooler, shallower to get warmer.A fish in your tank doesnt have this luxury.A 4 degree swing in one hour would be a lot and maybe dangerous to the fish.A 4 degree swing in 24 hours is not so bad.

I run my from 79 in the am hrs to 83 at night.
No problems. I do run a fan down over my sump?
plus i keep my air on 70 all day.By the way live in Fl so
that is why the air is running......
