Sun Anemone?

I was at the lfs today and they had a anemone that they called a sun anemone? I can not find anyinfo online under this name. It is bright yellow and has many small tentacles. Does anyone know anything about these? I want to buy it for my clowns but not sure what it is.

Looks like sun coral to me, not a sun anemone. You need perfect water quality to keep one of these guys, and is that your LFS tank? It doesn't look to good

I have purchased one about a month ago and it is doing wonderful. It is about the size of a softball and will with out a doubt, will let me know when it is hungry. I feed brine shrimp to each polyp every other day. When I first got it, I could see portions of the rock between the polyps, but now it is full. I will see if I can post a pic within the next few days. It is a piece that will take a lot of your time, if you get one. It takes me about 20-30 minutes to feed it, but the color is worth every minute.

By the appearence of your pic, when the tenticles are out, they are feeding. That is a good time to add the brine shrimp. They appear a little small, so krill may be to big or cut them in half. I don't mean to sound gross and I don't have any kids so I don't know the terminology, but I bought one of those devices that cleans out a baby's nose with. It is like a baster, but only about 4" long. It is perfect for dirct feeding brine shrimp. The ball is small for good control and it is made of glass, so you can watch the shrimp come out. Here is my question to you though, because we may not be talking about the same animal. Wasn't it attached to a rock when you bought it? Look up Tubastrea/ sun polyps/ sun corals and see if it matches your and let me know.

No problem. Glad I could help. Because of the flash and close proximity, I think it bleached out some of the yellow color. How's the little fella doing?

I actually have a Bubble Tip and he/she named pain is doing fine. I named it pain because of how much it moved around... seemed to have a mind of its own. I actually watched it scale a vertical wall of live rock (where I'd tried to barricade it from). I finally gave up and let it hang where it wants (as long as it's not on or near other coral).

I was noticing your substrate and wondered if there was something else you might consider. Since this is a bottom dweller and likes sand, I would say at least 4 inches of sand and no crushed coral might be something to try. You could try this in one area just to see if it makes a difference. Doing a small area shouldn't suffocate the rest of the bacteria in the eco system.

How much light do you have?

How many watts per bulb?

If it were me, I would dedicate a corner and excavate as much as possible to other parts of the aquarium, then replace it with sand. This will undoubtedly cause a very cloudy tank for a day or two and may not be practical given your inhabitants. As an alternative, you could do just a little at a time. But if you compare trying to burrow through a bed of coral to a bed of sand, you’ll see what I am getting at. Animals like sea stars, sand dollars and most likely your anemone will have a difficult time getting comfortable since it likes to borrow in the sand bed (according to the reference I posted).

If you had a hospital tank (or a good friend with a tank and extra room) to use for temporary shelter may also be a possible scenario.

Tough choices... and I’m probably not helping much because I haven’t had to deal with this, so I’m only bouncing ideas. Maybe someone else has had issues and had to change the substrate material?

I think I will go buy some sand tonight and I am looking in to a stronger light! I know no one else near me with a saltwater tank. I sure hope this works I would hate to lose him.

there are 10,000k white lights x2 65 watts each and the same for the blue.
I am just sick I think we lost our buddy, I rushed out and got him 20lbs of ls and came back and moved him as not to burry him and he lost a few tenticals. It makes me so sad.

I am so sorry to hear...

Not to give false hope, but I've heard others who have lost tenticals and survived.

I had one of those they were called flat mat were i bought it. they come in many colors but this is the first yellow one i see it5 is beautyful. the one i had was white but i saw some purple ones. it does need more sand they like to hide under the sand if stressed out. it is clown friendly at least for my allardi and maroon. i know it has been a long time since you posted but i hope it is doing fine. i'll post my flat mat's picture that i took at the fish shop before buying, but yours is just nicer than mine. good luck
