This is what my live rock looked like when I started to get a huge diatom algae bloom...then came every other algae known to man...or so it seemed...then the red slime began......all of these things went away once I got my ro/di hooked up...and a little patience...

hmmm, well the first thing you will want to do is go out and get yourself some quality water testing equipment. you will want to test for phosphate, calcium, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, PH ans salinity. Those are just the basics. I would recommend the brand salifert.

The type of algae you have is called cyano...it is actually a bacteria. There are a few ways to get rid of the cyano. I would recommend better water quality and getting mroe flow in the tank.

What kind of powerheads do you have? How often do you do a water change?

You may want to look under the RB library for more tips on how to control pest algae.

This is sooo dificult haha Do you guys think its because its not a saltwater ready tank? Cause i dont have it like most saltwater fish tanks are supposed to be. I acually just bought a 40 gallon tank and havnt set it up yet.

it is not because its not a saltwater ready tank....Its because of water quality and water flow.

I have about 500 folders to scan in at work and I have a double monitor system so I scan in the folders on one monitor and read this forum with the other. It helps pass the time while I wait for my tank to cycle but it also is giving me a wealth of great info to avoid any mistakes I made the first time around. Good luck with the tank. Definitely buy a test kit and maybe post a rundown of your equipment and get some opinions. I learned Bioballs for instance were a "No-No" from everyone here and am working to replace them before trying a reef tank.

I am also having my purple rocks turn white. I just got a red leg hermit crab and it seem to start soon after. I have been told that crabs don't do that. Are you sure it is your red legs? Is it a hermit crab you are referring to as red legs?

He has a problem with Cyano, which the crabs will eat.
