Default could my problem be?

ok . have a 36g corner tank set up with a sump/fuge under it .. i am having crazy nitrate problems (not this question) .. i set up the fuge with some red macro and cheato algea about 4 weeks ago and have seen 0 growth , its not dieing , but its not growing either .. i run a current dual 9watt light set with 10k&14k bulb at night and a 420$460 atinic during the day . my tank has a 150watt mh 14k light on during the day and just blue lunar lights at night. i am thinking my problem could either be to mush flow over the fuge area or wrong lights. ... any help?

R-E-D,

I had the same problem with a small coralife 9 watt pc light. I just bought a 6500k pc bulb w/ reflector at home depot.

Hopefully I'll get better growth with this set up.

I have a friend that installs & maintains tanks. He keeps a H&S denitrator on his 75 gal. and has less than 5 nitrates.

I'm considering keeping one when I upgrade.

I agree with Jim on the light. And I would also say cut back on the feeding if your nitrates are that high.Almost every new aquarist overfeeds.Fish dont need 3 meals a day and a midnight snack lol. There are a few people right here in RB who feed every other day and fat happy fish. They also dont have nitrate problems.

Dale,

The problem I have is that I keep anthias and I have to feed twice a day.

That why I'm running 2 phosbans now & considering a denitrator for the future.future.

Just out of curiosity, do you still have the 8 fish in the 35? Could be a contributing factor to the nitrate prob.

i only have a fire fish and a yellow strip maroon clown in the tank .. the rest are in holding at my lfs while i take care of the nitrate problem .. i only feed every other day so its not over feeding .. the nitrates have me stumped .. there is some offset in the tank i just cant figure it out ... YET!

If you are feeding 2 fish every other day then the only thing left is the test kit.Maybe its not doing what its supposed to.I would get another nitrate test kit and compare. It wouldnt be the first time one gave false readings.

i am going to take my water in to get tested tommorow .
someone on a different fourm told me that my live rock rubble in my wet dry could be the cause .. he said it should all be under water and not just have water trickleing over it like the old bioballs did... could this be true?

While the rock may be more effective if it were completly submerged,I doubt it is causing any problem or maufacturing nitrates.
