Default Leveling your stand?

What are you supposed to use to level your stand. I know you can use shims but can you use anything, because I have a ton of cardboard laying around and it would give me a much more accurate level as well as the ability to run strips along the bottom left side of the stand, more evenly distributing the weight. It does not need leveled much, maybe an 8th of an inch, but i have the knowledge and the time so i may as well level it now.

I used felt pads on the bottom of my stand, so I wouldn't scratch the hard wood floor.

I guess you can use cardboard for leveling, I just used wood shims for mine.

I used cedar shims from the hardware store. They were really cheap and worked great!

I used shims, I am guessing the weight after being filled would wear cardboard more, I would try shimms, only like a dollar or so as lowes

Ozzy makes a good point with the shims. You may also want to look into getting a sheet of thin foam to go under your tank to take any stress off of the corners of the tank; if the stand/floor isn't exactly level.

I will definitely get the foam for the bottom i think. What type of foam do you get and where from. The cardboard seems like it worked really nicely and i was afraid the wood shims would not be great on carpet

I used shims for a buck at the LHS. I think JV used a carpet pad or foam to help out as well...

I used cardboard and it worked really well, plus it is not bad on the carpet. I made sure that the tank was a little unlevel in favor of the cardboard side so that when it got heavy with rock and water it flattened the cardboard. It is perfectly level and is unnoticeable.
