just trying to figure out what kind of coral this is, just recieved it from a buddy.

it skinda looks to me like some version of a candy cane coral. I may be wrong but form the coloration and how the ends look i think it is. There are several diff kinds though, but i would say tht as good a guess as any. Look tht up nline and it may show you more. hope you find what it is.

I think john is correct. I have a candy cane that looks similar. Mine doesn't really have the bright colors as most but i think it my be my lighting.

boombadan
does yours puff out? my other candy cane puffs out this one doesnt. trying to figure out why. see the feeding tenticles at night so its alive. had it for a week

It is an LPS and commonly called trumpet or candy cane. It is a variety of Caulastrea, of which there are several although quite similar.

lol, i know right? his trumpet wasnt doing anything either, my LFS guy said its one of the easiest corals, im assuming he meant hard corals

Corals don't come very much easier to keep than those IMO.

I find they like med to lower light and med/low flow. What are you water parameters and in particular your PH? The tend to feed more at night so that is when you will see the sweepers. You can train them to open in the day by having them in the shade a bit but not too dark because they do contain zooxanthelea with are photosynthetic.

This isn't the best example but if the are healthy they should expand and look like they're full of jelly more like this;
