Hello, many things can caues it, read this post of mine;I thought the time had come to write this in the hope it will aid all members of the forum. I will suggest that when you post and are asking for help or for ideas, please include all basic information. Basic information should include; all water parameters, size of tank and complete set up meaning, filter type (sump, canister etc.), lighting (what type and total output) and if you have fish only with live rock and if you keep corals. Also how long the tank has been up. I know some of this is your bio but many bios don't contain this info. How many times has someone posted and then there is this list of postings addressing the above. If you give the most info you can to give us a good profile, it will cut down on response time and mis-diagnosis or answers that don't fit and we will all benefit. Happy aquarium keeping to you all. Also, do you have a proyein skimmer?

Various things contribute to cyano (lack of flow, over feeding, high phosphates, etc.).

I had a bout with it recently and siphoned out the parts with it on the sand.

I added 2 phosban reactors (1 runs rowaphos and the other runs carbon).

I also did large 20-30 % weekly water changes.

I recently had one of 3 halide bulbs go bad and the end of the tank it was on developed a small patch of red algee while there wasn't any in the rest of the tank so low light might contribute as well.
