| I dont think its necessary to put anything in the overflow. It would just be something to collect gunk that you really cant get to to clean out. All of that stuff can go in the sump and would be much more convenient. |

| I actually do not have a sump yet but I do have a built in overflow. It's four different sections (wierd older tank) and in one of the bigger sections where water comes up thru a tube and spills into the overflow is where I placed some lr rubble, it's just enough to cover the bottom and then, the other day I just added a handful of cheato. I do syphon about a cup or 2 a day out of that particular area as it does get organic build up but, it did that before I added those to it anyways. I have a mj900 in the other larger section returning water from the overflow back to the tank but, going to have it directed to my sump in the near future. But even after I have the sump, I will leave what I have in the overflow as it seems to be helping with the algae having the lr and cheato in there. It's helping my pod population grow again too, they're all over the inside of my overflow now. Guessing they like to hang out in the cheato? When I add my sump, I am going to have more cheato in it and also a couple of mangrove plants in the dsb part.

| How do you guys clean the overflow out? I can't seem to get rid of the organic leftovers.

| well, the way I do mine is, shut your pumps down, buy a fairlly inexspensive pump, you want to be able to attach a hose to both ends. I use a regular toothbrush, it works great for tight spots , and corners. once you get it all cleaned let the pump suck out water into a bucket, and refill with fresh mixed water, you kinda kill two birds with one stone. |

| I syphon a couple cups or so every day and I also see lots of snails going in and out so it stays pretty clean.
