Just Hawaii putting limits on the number of yellow tangs and some other exotic fish that may be exported.

US Fish and Wildlife shut down Tonga imports a week or so ago, and Hawaii still has the legislation in the works.

Countries that are not CITES members have to supply scientific studies/management plans to CITES in order to export to them(CITES members), Tonga didnt file so US stopped thier imports.

Link to thread on RB talking about it, http://www.reefbuilders.com/forums/r...a-no-more.html my post there has a link to a thread where Walt Smith posted what the regulations involved are.

I heard some company (the name escapes me) just bought several distributors and has all the rights to anything coming from the Red Sea.

Either way Im hearing these things it cant be a good sign. Im thinking aquaculture might be coming more prevalent sooner than we think.

My thoughts exactly Jim aquaculture is going to def. be more important in the coming years. One of my LFS has set up 2 600 gallon tanks just for aquaculture because things are starting to skyrocket in prices they say. Lol at work it's all we seems to talk about, but then again aquaculture is what we do

In the early 90s, when I was working at an lfs/saltwater wholesaler, we were wondering if we were going to be able to get stuff in and doing propagation tanks for stuff like leathers and xenia, so concerns about the availability of livestock arent anything new in the hobby.

hi. i don't know too much about this subject, except that a friend of mine sells corals and fish for a living, and he claims he can get anything. he tells me that all these rumors are for nothing but boosting sales.

Mr_X, I agree with you. I think most of this stuff is only rumors that are beeing spread throught the hobby. Yes, Hawaii is putting a limit on the amount of animals that can be caught, and perhaps tonga will not import to the US, but I dont think that will be too long. They will probably fill out the paperwork and all and get their act together. But then again, aquaculture will definatley become more prevelent in this hobby I would say just int the next 5 years! I liik back to when I started this hobby only 3.5 years ago, and my cruddy LFS never sold aquaculture and now they do. The environment is paying a price because of out hobby and because we are being careless. I forget where, but somewhere I had read that if there are 100fish caught to be sold, less that 50% will make it the first shipping day either from stress, cyonide, etc. Of that 50%, only 15% will make it the next 2-3 days. Then once acclimated in the LFS water, it all dpeends on how stressed, how soon someone buys it, etc to determine if they will live or not. If you think about it, for every 5-10 fish that live, 85-90 die.....isnt that a little unacceptable? I am sure that these figures are not constant, maybe they are seasonal, but still....think about aquaculture instead!
