This is personal preference. It is really hard to build the rock structure without some of it touching the back of the tank. Mine has pieces leaning on the back of the tank, but I also made sure that there is a lot of room back there for flow. It's kind of nice because I still get to watch the fish back there and have more room up front.

I believe seeing some nice clean sand up front adds a nice touch and brightens up a reef.

You know I used to have my LR in the middle but after a while I pushed it all to the back and bought an extra powerhead to make sure there was flow in all the dead spots.... By pushing it against the back glass I was able to build shelves for all the sps I was getting.

I have my main stack more forward along the center with space behind, then at the top there are a few rocks propped from the stack back to the back glass, so behind the rock is very open for flow. I also have a free standing pillar on one end.

You run the risk of dead spots when stacking rocks along the back wall.
You can build a pvc frame and secure the live rock with cable ties to create some interesting caves, etc.

build them up to the sides. i think it looks way better than having them in the back
