Default triggers and reefs

Getting back into the hobby and looking for some advice. Are triggers reef safe? Thinking of nigers and picasso to populate a 56 tall tank set up as a reef. thanks for the help

Triggers are generally not reef safe. Nigers and Picassos are not reef safe.

Also...a 56 gal tall is gonna be hard to light well enough for a reef. What kind of lighting are you using?

i agree that triggers are not safe but my friend has a clown trigger in his reef and he even has a small maroon clown, that it doesn't mess with. He says you have to keep your triggers happy by feeding them constantly. Just a though.

eventually the clown trigger will get very aggressive with age and kill everything in the tank.

Default Reef Safe Triggers

I have a Blue Jaw Trigger

He doesn't seem to be bothering any of my corals...

I have a Niger Trigger and he seems to be fine in my reef. I feed him well and he leaves everything alone. I have had him for nearly two years now. I have read that they are one of the few that are "Harmless to corals" according to "Marine fishes 500+essential to know aquarium species" by Scott W. Michael. They will eat some crustaceans though. Add the crustaceans first to keep together. Another thing to consider is they can get quite large, up to 19in including tail, so you need a large tank. The same book rates the clown trigger as "not reef suitable"
