Icon5 Yellow Eyed Tang, any thoughts???

Saw one in the store the other day and I fell in love. I want to buy him but want some opinions on him first. I have 2 orange clown fish right now, and probably wouldn't add anything else besides the tang...maybe a blenny. What do you guys think? Is he aggresive, will my clowns beat up on him???

Thanks,
Will

If your tank is only 22 gallons, I'm not sure if any tang is a good idea. The Kole tangs will get to be around 7 inches and will be a bit cramped in there. Also, it will need some serious supplemental feeding, since your tank will not be able to provide enough algae for it to snack on.

The recommended tank for a yellow eye is 75. I would go 75 and go for it.

I think you could get away with a YT in a 72g Bow.. The recommended DT volume does vary quite a bit when deciding on Tangs.. Although, your current (to-be) transferred stock list will also impact your recommended new tank size, and whether or not a YT is appropriate and/or compatible along with it.

So are you saying the clowns might not go well with the tang I want and a 72 bow is not big enough? I plan on putting the clowns in last since they seem to be the most aggressive and have there current established territory, but in a new tank they wouldn't have that established territory, it would all be new to them. I have seen tangs and clowns together before.

While the tang is recommened for a 75 remember this is based on a standard rectangular tank to provide swim room. As for the clowns I assume percs they should be fine with the tang. This tang is an exellent grazer (mostly on your glass and LR) and will not do well if you don't have enough algae present so supplimenting with algae sheets may be necessary. These are beautiful fish and are quite fun to watch (they do like to hide and swim around rock so make sure you give them some place to relax and swim through).

As with all tangs I recommened you quarantine it first and treat for ich if need be.

Nope, never said you couldn't keep Clowns and Tangs together. I have a mated pair of Clowns and a BHT together right now, they practically ignore each other. I stated to take your current stock list into consideration before purchasing a YT.. Not just directed towards you, but everyone else viewing this thread.. In your situation, ignore that statement since there are only Clowns in there right now. And (again as stated previously) you should be able to fit a YT into a 72 Bow.. I have seen YT's in 30g tanks (which did set me off by the way.)

Alright, thanks guys. I will probably just go with a standard 75 so there is more swimming room.
