Hybrid Centropyge are you a lumper or a splitter? OK so I keep seeing these posts and pics of hybrid Centropyge. I'm just wondering what all of you are thinking on these guys and throwing out some questions.
Are these truly hybrids (is there any genetic work being done on them)? Where are they from? or are we dealing with one of a couple other factors such as...
Polymorphism, different color forms occurring in the same geographic region, as in P. maculosus or, most famously for the Centros, C. bicolor.
Clinal Variation, where variation increases as the distance between two populations increases.
Are these isolated populations as in P. diacanthus (indo vs. pac. form) or H. cilaris (famous "koi morphs" from outlying islands)?
If they are hybrids what’s the evidence? Are they coming from hybrid zones where species overlap?
Finally, the ocean is a big place- could some of these be species? I’m not out there where they are coming from so are there one or two or many of these little guys?
This just is fascinating to me and I would love to hear what you all are thinking and would love to hear if anyone is delving deeper into this. |
