Default Snowflake eel??...

I have heard a lot of different things from a lot of different people and want to get this straight... Are snowflake eels reef safe? If u got one could you keep it with like fish no less than 3 inches and maby a starfish or a sea cucumber??...If it is well feed could i keep it in a 55 gallon reef tank? Would it be able to be kept with invertabrates like snails and hermit crabs? It will have a 20 gallon sump since its been said eels are very dirty. It should it be fine it if it doesn't get a lot bigger than the fish shouldn't it? I have posted this thread for my friend boomerisnuts since he wants to get into the saltwater hobby

Advice is appreciated

thankks,
Dan

I've heard that their teeth are actually shaped more like molars than canines for grinding up invertebrates. Not sure if its true, never looked inside one of their mouths b4, don't intend to . . . at least while their alive. I work part-time in a LFS and my boss has been working the aquarium trade for 20+ years, i'll ask him what he thinks next time i work.

yes they are for grinding shellfish not sharp snowflake are reef safe get a relitivly smaller one they will be affraid of the bigger fish and it will stay that way for the rest of their life so dont go and get a huge one get a small one and let the fish addapt to the little eel

mine did fine with a puffer, a volitan, and 4 damsels and a yellow tang for a while. then out of no where he became agressive. he was even eating turbosnails like cookies. Really he was OK for like a year. the final straw was he grabbed the puffer and dragged it under "his" piece of LR. puffer puffed, split a side, and the eel went back to the LFS. he was around 20" when i sold him. he is now in a reef tank on display in the store and has shown no signs of agressiveness.

just keep him well fed and away from anything less than 1/3 of his length and he should be fine. they are opportunistic, so if you have a sick or weakened fish, put them in a QT or prepare for them to become eel food.

I have a snowflake eel about 12 inches long he is fairly new to my home about 4 months. The other day i changed everything from my old tank to a new 55 gal. he is in there with a lion a large hermit crab and a longspine black urchin. this morning I went to feed and no eel in sight i wiggled all rocks and no action so I looked under the stand cause i heard they like to escape and sure enough he was under there! still gasping for air not sure how long he was out but i threw him back in and am watching him close!
