Default Goby question

My goby has been in hiding since last evening, have looked and can't seem to find it. Acclimated for 3 hours and seemed like it was fine in the tank. Does anyone know of the habits of these fish? Thanks, Deb

Hi Deb,
Most fish when initially introduced into a new tank will go into hiding for a day or so. Give him some time to get used to his surroundings.

This is just a memory of my experiences with gobies from around 20 years ago. (yeah a long time ago but i loved them and still do so I have memories of them).

They act shy for the first week to 2 weeks. Once they get hungry or acclimated they will become more brave slowly showing themselves and darting out to get food. Some will eventually be more brazen but some will stay reclusive. Which goby do you have that will help.

By the by, my tank will be a gobiefest. I am going to have bunches of gobies and will be better able to give info on gobies soon. They are some of my favorite fish.

If you have a sand sifting goby its probably checking out the back side of the tank where there is less commotion. In a few days it'll get curious about the front side and set up a house.

If you have a non sifting goby like a watchman (or maybe its just my watchman goby that doesn't sift sand) look in the rock work. Mine found a miniature hole that it can stick out of without anyone seeing it unless you know exactly what to look for.

Hey Deb!
Depends on the goby. My watchman goes into hiding for a few days whenever I aquascape. Took it several days to pop out from under the rock when I first got it. sgarron had the same issue just recently, both watchmans stayed hidden for about a week.
Take it easy. Don't rush to tear up the rockwork. It's there somewhere, probably alive and well.

well, it is a rusty goby.

I am sure if you just leave it be for a day or 2 it will be fine. just make sure it can get the food without moving too much.

Aaaah. Either way, it will not eat until it is good and ready to. Don't worry about it starving if you cannot supply a pipeline. There is always something lying around...

my goby firefish finds the smallest holes in the LR and hides out the other day i woundered if it had just poofed.... then out it came(like a mouse if its head can fit through so can its body) it has 1 spot that at night as soon as you turn out the lights it goes into its a neat rock more less hollow with windows.

GL with your new fish

I've got an engineer goby that for the first few weeks dug a good sized cave under my large rock in the middle and only saw his head from time to time but now I seem to see him more than my clownfish!
