 they must be starving I bought two tank raised clowns last Wednesday and they won't eat. I have always been feeding my fish Aquadine. Aquadine Duraflake Freshwater Fish Food and for some reason they wouldn't eat it, so I thought.. mmm.. maybe some garlic. So I garlic'd up my aquadine (only a feeding portion) and threw it in the tank.. one of the clowns went up to it, put it in it's mouth and spat it out. I then talked to my friend and LFS owner. He said that maybe they are just picky, that's understandable. so I bought some spiraluna (not sure on spelling) enriched brine shrimp.. frozen. They won't eat that either, although my fusigobius loves it. I have noticed this morning when I woke up that the smaller clown has a strain of something, about 4-6 inches long coming from it's poopoo place. I figured that maybe they are eating, just eating something in my tank. I don't know anything about that because I'm new to saltwater. Please help. I really like these two clowns. | Re: they must be starving test your water! get back to us about the readings! IMO i would avoid using flakes, exspecially flakes made for freshwater! i would use the brine shrimp and the marine blend. i had the same problem your having. the problem was the way i acclimated them. i didnt have time and i wanted to get them out of the bag asap, so i just floated them. im a firm believer in drip acclimation and that was the problem!

| Re: they must be starving I tested my water nitrites and ammonia are practically at zero (if it's not zero it's a little above) nitrate is somewhere between 20-40 ppm. pH is around 8.2-8.4. My salinity was a notch above the red-zone on the instant ocean hydrometer so I took out a gallon and added 1.5 fresh. You talked about acclimation. I floated 'em for about 15-20 minutes. I am unaware of the drip acclimation.. what is it? What did you do to yours? |

| Re: they must be starving If you float you should do it for at least a hour imo. Here is a good link on dripping. Saltwater Fish Superstore - Saltwaterfish.com. Try a enriched brine or put some garlic gaurd on your flake food that might help. |

| Re: they must be starving they died.. both of them. I got two more, one seems to be turning dark on top and swimming near the bottom. the other one is having a blast and loving it. He also seems to be ramming himself into the glass... I hope that's ok. The one that is darker on top and sluggish is not eating. I am afraid I am going to lose him, or her. My water parameters are actually better than before... I don't know what's going wrong with me trying to keep clowns. andrew |

| Re: they must be starving I think you need to get your ammonia/nitrite to 0 and your nitrate no more than 10ppm. Are you using ro/di water ? Do you have a fish only setup ? You can keep your specific gravity at around 1.020-1.022 if you do to help ward off parasites. Try feeding "live" brineshrimp with garlic extract to stimulate finicky eaters. Also, you might want to do a massive water change after the latest casualties. Some recommended reading are the conscience aquarist by robert fenner and clownfishes by joyce wilkersen. | Re: they must be starving I do have my ammonia/nitrite to 0 and I'm working on getting it down to 10 ppm, I have it between 20 and 10 now. That's my specific gravity also. I don't feed em the live brine.. been waiting on my buddy to give me some and my LFS to get some in so I can start my own culture. I have already done the water change. One thing.. I haven't read those books before. Can I get em at books-a-million? thanks andrew |

| Re: they must be starving megahaus, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Checking water parameters is always a good thing when you have an ailing fish. One thing that I am not noticing from the responses you have gotten has to do with internal parasites. Long stringy feces should raise a flag. Whenever you are waiting for a reply, Google is your best friend.
