Default diatom filter of UV sterilizer?

I have a 55 gallon reef tank and my fish are having minor problems with parasites. Small white spots keep showing up, but the next day my cleaner shrimp takes care of it ( it seems). I havn't been hospitalizing them in my qt tank because the shrimp seems to be taking car of it. To further prevent this problem and try and get the parasites out off the water i want to know what people suggest. I've been reading about diatom filtters and it seems like a good solution but i don't really understand them ( the charging and everything) or should i just purchase a uv sterilizer. Any suggestions?

I have a UV sterilizer hooked up the good thing is its there if you want to use it.It will kill all that dare to pass through it both good and bad.I have mine on a timer with my lights so it doesn't run all the time just when the lights are on thats about 8-hrs a day.I haven;t had any bad effects from it.
