Are blue starfish safe for reefs, and if so are they easy to keep? Any other starfish reccomendations?

a blue linka is reef safe but requires perfect water quality, also requires at least a 2 hour drip acclimation before hand, never expose a linka starfish to air, I'd handle it with the bag as well, less stress on a very sensitive creature

Yes, they are reef safe! But VERY VERY hard to keep many die cause there is no know food for it. You will hear many diff. things but no one knows for sure! I bout one and it lived for a while but the lfs i got it from not only touched it but also let it touch the air! I told them about that and they looked at me like I was crazy! So I did not by that one went some where else did everything by the book and it still died. I do not like killing anything so I think I am done with those for a very long time.

I have one and have had it for a couple months so far. Seems to be doing pretty good. Doesnt move much just hangs out near my overflows. Guess it knows that is a good spot to get some grub. Anyways I didnt drip acclimate and I did take it out of the bag and put it in my tank exposing it to air for a very breif moment. I did acclimate for like 30 minutes though but only by adding a little of my water to the bag every 10 minutes. None of this means that it wont die in the future, I am about 95% sure that it wont be dying anytime soon. I do wonder sometimes because I have heard all of these stories about the blue starfish.

Not exposing it to air or actually touching it are measures usually taken to put less stress on a sensitive creature. The 2 hr drip acclimation just ensures less stress as the water changes wont be such a shock to the starfish..

I hope that blue star stays alive for ever for ya

They are so cool, I'm still debating on gettin one myself

Default blue star

I bought one at Petco and had it happily mixing in my 29 gal reef tank for about 4 months. Then I had to remove an aggressive fish, and upon shifting around the furniture (live rock) one rock crushed the star fish against the glass, and it died. I was really sad, because it was such a lively happy fish moving about the glass all day long and hanging out on the bottom compatible with the serpent star at night. I have been waiting to buy another one but have not seen any for sale. My understanding is that they like to eat pods, and other microorganisms, so a mature tank is needed, with lots of live rock.

I haven't had much luck with star fish in the past. My tank wasn't ready and unfortunately mine died. Good luck to you, as they are pretty to have and watch.

They are both linkia and the same to keep. my water is not perfect and i did not drip aclimate any of mine. Just do not let them touch air or handle them the oils from your hands is poiseness to them. If you have an established tank youll be fine.
