it depends on what kind you have. majority of soft corals and polyps, have an algae in them called zooxantellae. It is an algae which lives inside ot the tissue of the corals polyps. With photosynthesis, the coral extract much of its needed nutrients from the zooxanthellae.

Soft corals will enjoy a good phytoplankton feeding here and there for sure !!!

Reef Nutrition makes a great feed called "phyto-feast" top notch stuff IMO...

Feeding corals of any type can help them grow faster and maintain more color, esp. if your lighting is insufficient, but it usually isn't necessary and can negatively affect everything in your tank if you overfeed or your water quality gets worse because of feeding them. Because of that, I don't recommend feeding any soft coral since they grow fast enough on there own and better water quality benefits all your corals and fish. When in doubt, go by the "less is more" rule.

Deb, yes you can feed your corals directly. Shut off your pumps and allow the current to stop. Drop your food over the corals, and they can and will eat it. More here:Renaming Our Corals by Chris Jury - Reefkeeping.com
