Default Can anyone tell me what this is?

I am completely new to saltwater, and corals. This was a passenger on a piece of live rock I got from a friend. 2 weeks ago it was about 1/8" in diameter, and now its about 1/4".

It looks soft and 'fluttery' so i thought a 'soft' coral forum would be the place to ask.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the info.

Are red mushrooms rare?

I assumed that it was something "light loving", so it is on the highest live rock in my tank. Interestingly enough, this is by far the most "live" of the live rocks i have.

No, red mushrooms are not rare, but they are pretty. I'm not sure what kind of lighting you have, but mushrooms typically like a little more light than the standard NO fluorescent light fixtures, but not as much light as MH fixtures put out.

My experience is that mushrooms do better lower in the tank. That makes them spread out more.

thanks for the advice glamka.

high in the tank for me right now is about half way up. all i have is 6 pieces of live rock. so it limited my aquascaping options.

i am going to get more (and cure it of course) before i add anything more than crabs/snails.

as it seems you have a bit of experience, i would like to ask a personal opinion.

have you ever dealt with Walt Smith International? They sound very serious about shipping the best quality, and from the photos on thier website it appears that they have a great facility. But personal experience trumps photos and text everytime.

also you were asking someone about walt smith international. I here its a good place but have no personal experience with them. but saltwaterfish.com i have ordered from a couple times and have been VERY happy with the products of inverts and fish.

You don't have to feed them. Low light is all they need. They will propagate quickly if water parameters are good. Mine doubled in population in less than 6 months and still have new ones coming out!

I have learned that if you put a rubber band around the mushroom not too tight, it will split off and grow another one, the band has to be through the center, just enough pressure to press the center down, then you can repeat this over and over. I have done this, it does work

not sure if i get what you mean by putting a rubber band around the shroom...got any pics of your work? last time i tried to frag my shrooms i wound up with NOTHING!!! wont be trying that again anytime soon, dont have enough of them to keep screwing up on. although i believe when i hacked a green shroom off a rock and ended up killing it...dont ask me how but there are 2 small "what look like" shrooms starting to grow where the original one was. it will be sometime before they actually look like them though.
