Default yellow polyps vs a weed whacker

i have a question on yellow polyps. i have a rock just covered in yellow polyps....it has slowly started to spread off the rock which i am happy about.

the question is...why is 1/2 the rocks yellow polyps fully open and waving in the flow and the other 1/2 is at most 50% open and retracted. sort of looks like a lawnmower rolled over the rock and chopped it down but there is nothing wrong the rock. just looks weird. plus its always the same side of the rock.

just curious.

could be a lot of reasons, the polyps retract when a fish hits them or lets say that you wave your hand in front of them or try to touch them (eek)

yeah, but they usually only retract for a few minutes..not days. i am gonna take a snapshot and post it later. i gotta go drop in my new sally lightfoot crab, he's been floating for a while, lets see if he goes to work on the hair algae.

That happens to mine every once in while because a snail or crab is rooting around in them.
