Default Best mounting methods for your corals?

Just looking for some possible new ways to mount my new corals to the live rock. Maybe you have some little trick that works great that we could all use.

you could use super glue or if you would like to mount them on your glass, do a search on google for thses things called frag mags.

I would try the natural approach, wedge you'r coral in the rock's that you have, or purchase a few small peice's to do so. I am not too sure if using super glue is a safe method, think about the placement of you'r coral, sometime's moving these guy's to a better location is essential.

I have mounted probably 100 or more frags with super glue GEL. Works great, does not affect anything in the tank and keeps frags right where you want them. Works even better if you can mount them outside of the water, but you can attach sps frags to any of your live rock with super glue. Frag mags look cool also. Lets you attach corals to the glass sides of your tank. My montipora digitata already tries to attach to the glass without the frag mags!

Question on mounting coral???

I never would have thought about using super glue gel in a tank (is there a certain brand that is prefered over another?), I understand this is to get the desired location (correct?) as is the wedging techniqe? But, I was wondering would the coral eventually attach themselves without assistance or is it necessary to assist them in mounting to the rock? Ok, so this may be a newbie question, lol:rolleyes: Thank for your time..

i got a tube of gel at my LFS and it works in like 30 seconds. I've even glued my live rock together to form really nice natural looking aquascapes. I've only glued 2 corals so far and it works. It's not permanent either. I accidently knocked one of my corals off its rock today while placing a new brain coral in my sand bed and had to reglue it and the old glue came right off with a snap.

I need it to be more perminent because some of my corals are getting quite large and the amount of weight could cause it to tople over. My largest one is about the size of a cantelope and it grows out and away from the rock. So I need something strong. The stuff I use is working but I just thought I would ask to see if there were any other tricks of the trade that work that I didn't know about.

If it is a hard coral you can use a putty. I got some from dr. foster and smith.com worked well for me.

I like it well enough. I have had better luck with it than I did with super glue type products. I just heard the other day to use both. Take the putty stuff and make a ball and fill the center up with the super glue stuff. Once you press the coral into it against the live rock where you want it helps with the bonding. I'll have to try it next time. I am moving in about two months and I am going to be setting up a new bigger tank. I am not looking forward to moving my tank. If I can sell my house and leave my old one and just start fresh it will be a big relief.

Hey someone would be lucky to have it. I like the putty cause I use it under water. Can you also use the glue under water?

I have tried the super glue under water and I don't like it as muchas the putty. The putty is easier to wedge into the cracks and crevises in the rock.

Reefaddict,
I am not talking from experience, but came across an article from ReefKeeping Magazine which you probably already read. Coral frags would be lightweight, so may not help in what you need but I'll put it out for anyone interested, here's the address to copy and paste:

Securing Propagated Corals: Methods of Fixing Live Coral to Hard Substrates by Anthony Calfo -

I wish I had your problem of securing large corals so they don't fall over. (LARGE AS A CANTELOPE!! )
Which one is THAT large. I can imagine a bushy acropora...Have you tried to propagate it? Imagine you will be in survival mode during the next few months as you move. Indeed sounds like you need to upgrade in size. Did you already buy your new tank? I recently saw someone auction off their old tank on EBAY with entire set up, including corals, fish, EVERYTHING in Florida, I believe because they were moving. It sold fast.
Best wishes in your endeavors.

Does the green putty stay green in color when it dries?

If a coral is left in one spot long enough will it grow into it and attach itself? I just got a Pocillopora ( I believe) and I wedged it into a rock hoping it'll eventually grow into it. Also, what kind of chemicals do these corals need...I was thinking about buying the Kent starter pack?

Sorry, The putty I have is a stone color and yes it stays that color. What ever color it is after you mix it is what color that it is going to be.

I use super glue for the hard corals just make sure the rock is dry and dry off the bottom of the coral they can be out of water for 5 minutes or so and it shouldnt hurt them. for soft i just use a piece of yarn wait about two weeks and then go in and cut the yarn...have not had any problems yet
