Default Best way to get multi directional current

I have a 180 gal All-glass w/overflows. I am using a mag24 for my returns. I am curious if this is enough to cause the flow in the tank to be chaotic so to speak. I want to start kepping sps but not sure the best way to get multidirectional currents. Any suggestions would be awesome. I recently aquired a Seio m2600 that i plan on adding to mix up the flow even more but unsure of the best place to put it.

Look at Tunze Powerheads mainly the Stream series, with a multicontroller, your corals will love that flow that Tunze Produces.

I've decided to get a 4-way drum from oceans motion and some of the revolution heads. I think it will be cheaper in the long run and I think it will produce more chaotic flow than the TUNZE.

mtfabel, are you keeping primarialy softies? The reason I ask is that my 120 has a total of 4,000 gph (33 times turnover) of flow and I need to add more for my acros.
If you are doing LPS and softies you will be fine. If acro's the Tunze's in addition to the OM 4 way would be a way to go. You could also try the Seio's or the new Hydor Korallia 4's. Any of these stream type pumps definitely produce the type of flow you need to keep sps happy.

I have built a few of the maxi-jet mods. Those pretty much took care of my problem. Actually they are pushing more water than I thought they were going to so i had to move them around till I found a place where they werent trying to rip my mushrooms of their rocks.

MJ900's are a better choice to mod IMO, they consume less wattage and put out about the same GPH after the mod...

I didnt care to much for the MJMODS when I did em, I found em to be noisy after time and the current was very strong out of them, I prefere the soft dispursed flow of tunze and seio's

its all preference

Yeah. I did those MJ mods. Produces a ton of current but pretty violent and directional and BIG looking. After buying the powerhead and paying for the mod I still have the heat and electricity in my tank. Do what I did and bite the bullet. Listen to the guys that got the great looking tanks and get tunze or in my case 2 echo techs. No more heat, no more electricity. Yes, Im broke also.

Just so you can see that I have already decided what route I am taking.

And you guys are right about the MJMods the flow is very chaotic and violent. I had to stop using mine for that reason.

The Seios are a lot less turbulent than the mjmods so you should be OK.

ok, thanks! and anothe quick questoin. would you say it is best to put the SEIO's on opposite sides and blowing water at eachother, or towards the glass or into the rockwork? I want a good amounts of low, i just dont want TOO much. And as im not a pro in water flow, im not sure what is too much. i only have soft corals (cabbage leather, toadstook, polyps, shrooms, and one brain)

Im thinking I would try and get the flow so that they cross paths. That would create more multi directional flow I would think.

Glad to hear that I went with the tunze streams for my 120 tank. I will let you guys know what I think of them once I get them set up. Yeah they were costly (not super duper costly) but I kept reading all around how nicely they rock so I went with it. I plan on one on each side and may pick up a maxi jet and put a multi directional head on it for the back wall middle to help create some random turbulence. But just want to see the water flow from the two tunze first.

whe its all said and done, it will probably cost you $400-500, but if you hook up a hayward actuated ball valve and hook it up to a suncoast microprocessor, you can T off your main return line and get a nice, chaotic random switching of flows rom one side to the other. get the powerheads out of your tanks.....they look bad, they kill inverts, and its just one more piece of electrical equipment inside the tank.
