Default Flame scallops

I have been looking at Flame scollops and find that there is a lot of differance in what is said about care. I see at some places thay or listed Level of Care: Easy-Moderate like here
Electric Flame Scallop For Sale Saltwater Fish For Sale Saltwater Aquarium Fish Marine Fish Corals Anemones Invertebrates Inverts Saltwater Aquarium Fish Marine Fish Website Store. Buy Sell
And then I look at others that Care Level: Difficult like this
Flame Scallop (Lima scabra)
Then I find this INVERTEBRATE NON-COLUMN by ROB TOONEN
Invertebrate Non-Column - Rob Toonen
I'm confused but I'm thinking that maybe I should pass on flame scollops. Has any one here had any luck keeping one for more then a year? Or for that matter had any one had bad luck with them?

I have never had scallops and know nothing about them. But here's my thoughts.....take it for what its worth.....

Research about water conditions and food. Try using a coral feeder to feed them and they should do fine.

Also, I feed my shrimp by hand. The guy sits in my hand and eats happily. He can't compete for food with the others and you don't want waste left at the bottom for it to feed on.

BTW I also caught my Niger Trigger that way...It sat in my had to eat and I picked it up......

I am not very proud of it but it had to be done to save the hermits and shrimp...It was a mistake to put him in ..in the first place.

hey ed, i am no expert in any way, shape, or form, but i have had 1st flame scallop for over 5 months if not longer and my electric flame scallop maybe 4 months and there is no special care of maintenance whatsoever for either of them. i have never spot fed them or anything. hell, for like 2 months they both moved around the tank and took up residence inside the live rock, could barely see them. i eventually reached in, grabbed the electric and put him up front so i could see him. he attached himself and has been there ever since. the other one is still wedged in the rock, he'll come out or move when he's ready. i say forget what everyone else is saying and get yourself a couple. for $15 its well worth it...especially when they move around the tank snapping their shells shut...scares the hell out of the kids. i told them they could jump outta the tank and could bite their toes...good fun for the whole family.

I had one of these and everything seemed fine but always had to pull it out of the rock. Mine did die not to long ago I had it maybe 4months or so it was 8bucks so i wasent upset about the money, just mad that it died. The lady at the lfs told me that it probably wouldnt last longer than a year thats why it so cheap. Maybe if i didnt keep pulling it out of the rocks it would of lived longer.

They almost always end up starving in reef tanks. I have tried them a couple times in the past will little success. The only people that I know if that have had good success with them are people that have FOWLR tanks and the all have "dirtier" water than most reef tanks. I think the dirtier water help them survive better in their tanks than in the tanks that house corals. The other reason why I shy away from flame scallops is that if you have a lot of rock in your tank like I do, they will likely move into places that are next to impossible to spot feed, and/or even find in your tank.

I like the story you told the kids. I read in one site that thay only live 3 to 4 years in the wild and get to about 3" so I was wondering if you get a smaller one if they might live longer.

I actually was looking at some today...they look very cool, but the lfs guy told me they live for only a year. I just hate seeing anything die in my tank.

look at it this way..you get a couple flame scallops, enjoy them while they are alive(a year is a long time), if they do start to die, your clean up crew will have a field day, and then you'll have a shell to play with and move around in the tank. when my blue clam died it was clean in less than a day, i set it up on a piece of live rock and if i fish gets scared they like to go into it for protection like a lil cave with only 1 way in or out.

I have a small cave in the middle of my tank at the bottem and my eletric flame scallop took up residence in it.

I have had him for four months now and he is thriving well in my reef tank, I dont give him any speacial attention, I dont feed him anything.....I dont do anything for him actually......he is growing like a beast though and is always open except when I am blasting tool.

BUT thats how I treat my corcea clam too and he is also very happy without any extra attention.

Come too think of it I think people try way too hard too make things happy, I keep my water decent and feed my fish frozen brine shrimp and everything in my tank stays alive and grows with no problems.

I have never dosed my tank with anything except calcium......eletric flame scallops are very very cool and easy too take care of just build him a spot too get some shade and flow and he will be happy.
