Icon14 Help, hole forming in clam shell!

hello,
I have a crocea clam and yesterday I noticed a hole forming on one side of the shell towards the bottom of it and appears it has not gone all the way through it. What would this be and what do I do about it. Please help me!

Thank you,
sooner reefer

Can you post any pictures? There are some predatory whelks which drill in to the shells of clams/snails.

graveyardworm,

The clam is attatched to my rock. I dont know if I can get a good pic of it. I will try. What is a whelk? I had another guy tell me It could be a burrowing snail, could that be the culprit?

Thanks,
Sooner Reefer

A whelk is a predatory snail.

Thank you.
I will try to get a pic. How big is a whelk and what do they look like?

The whelks may be fairly small. I'm not entirely sure as there are likely several whelks which feed in this manner. Shell shape would be very similar to Nassarius sp. with the little snorkel protruding from the shell opening. Have you looked underneath the clam for any potential predators? Many whelks tend to hide during the day, and I would suspect one preying on you clam would probably be hidden very close to its meal.
