Default Iodine

How often should iodine be added to a tank that has mushrooms?

Thanks for the quick posting. I have a 55 gallon tank with a yellow tang, tomato clown, a goby, a angel fish, a couple of damsels and about 65 lbs. of live rock. There are about 3 mushrooms in the tank now and I am looking at adding a few more and a few zoos. There is a sump running in the tank.

Those only tanks that I feel it is worth dosing iodine in are the tanks that house Xenia. All other corals do just fine without any iodine additives. Besides, iodine gets pulled out of your tank very quickly by your skimmer and is dangerous to your inhabitants if overdosed.

After listening to a marine biologist speak tonight at a club meeting I came home and threw my bottle of Iodine in the garbage. Nothing but trouble in that bottle.

Kevin, I would love to answer that but so much stuff was said last night that I am now trying to write stuff down so it is not lost. The club is going to have a transcript printed and I think might even put it online. Tom Wyatt told me he was going to put his power point presentation on the internet at some point in time. I will try and remember to check on these things and if you would remind me in a little time I will look into it again.

He did have some to say about iodine and I was impressed enough with what he was saying to decide for my tank Im not dosing it. I am sorry for not remembering. I probably should not make these type of statements if I dont have the answer on my tongue. Again, things from last night are still a little blurry.

He was talking about Cyano and then started in about electrons or something and some Cyano needs NO nutrients and NO phosphates but just the fact snail shells are silicate means are tanks prone to algae and on and on...see where all this is going. For 90 min as fast as he could talk.

Then on to LR holding phosphstes where its buried in the sand, DSB needing replaced every 2-3 years, Just from one thing to the next bam bam bam...Algae forming inside our RO holding tanks before the water ever gets to our tanks, Algae cells developing in over used coconut shells before we get it changed out, Red slime has evolved to develop bubbles to elevate it so its closer to another food source the light...yea, on and on
