This is a heated debate with some, which is better? For a lot of DIY reefers they will of course choose the float valve. Others will stick with the optical eye. Tunze and Elos are the only aquarium related companies that we know of that both provide an optical eye and and float valve for added backup. So which do you use and why? Respond in comments.

I personally like the optical eye.I dont trust the floats.Anyone ever had their toilet stick?Same thing.I do like the idea of having the float as a backup though.

I use a float valve with my auto top off system, but only because it is cheaper. I have had the float stick due to salt crystal formation causing all of my top off water (~5gal) to be dosed into my sump all at once. Luckily the sump didn’t overflow and I didn’t lose any tank mates, but I’m always checking it now and going out of town is a hastle. So, I will probably be looking into an optical eye soon.
