While Salifert has had a good run for the past several years we are seeing a slow switch to other testing kits. Way back in 2002 the rage if you were a good reef keeper was to purchase the standard tried and true Salifert testing kits. However, fast forward 6 years and more aquarists are trying out an Italian company that goes by the name of Elos. The switchover which we first started to see back in 2006 abit slowly can be defined by Salifert testing quality problems. Another reason that Elos is catching on faster is their test kits are some of the easiest to read in the industry. Along with the new colorimeter which takes the guess work out of finding out if your N03 levels are in fact .01 or .02, we have all been there before. Elos isn’t the only company benefiting from Salifert’s past quality control problems, API which some aquarists are switching to is a good basic test kit. The popular feature set on API is the price, they are generally cheaper then their Salifert and Elos counterparts. Although some reef keepers prefer one brand over another, most have a variety of testing kits in which to choose from and Salifert is on the decline.
Update: This data is based off a Reef Builders market research survey that was conducted in 2008.

Salifert dropper bottles are not the greatest. Drop control is harder then other test kits.
Has anyone ever tried dosing 8 uniform drops when using Salifert’s Ca test?
Ryan where are you getting your data from? Elos may be selling more test kits but most of the stores I visit stock Salifert products way more than Elos. the titration of Salifert kits is still the most accurate and the most precise in my opinion.
Hey guys,
Bogus information!!! I just tried out the RedSea kits and will be keeping my Saliferts for certain!
Saliferts are STILL the easiest to use and VERY VERY accurate!! Not to mention more tests for your money!
Yea, you guys use the Elos and save the inshort supply Saliferts for me!
Thanks……………………I think
Todd did you even read the post? Redsea wasn’t even mentioned. Also it’s funny because I just bought calcium test kits from Elos and they are much easier to use then salifert. I think I will switch to Elos in time as I can afford it.
I will not use Salifert! For 1 I have an overload of corals in my tank-Stonies to be more presise. And most of my peremters are very high, Ca-520,DKH-14. And these 2 kits are very expensive when it comes to testing. Always use the High readings, therefore test kit last half as long. 2nd, Api is much easier to read.
Kevin,
Please do! Save the Saliferts for me! Yes, I read the post and was just useing the RedSea as a example. It was free…………….IT WAS JUNK!
I bought Elos after reading bad things about Salifert in the recent past on the reviews of Marine Depot, Reefcentral etc…
I am very happy i switched…Simple kits and colour changes are very apparent.
I will use Salifert if i cant get my hands on an Elos.
