Those aquatic life HID lighting units that we brought you back in September are now shipping. The units come in 3 common sizes, 36 inch, 48 inch and 72 inch to shine down on your aquarium. Each High Intensity Discharge 700+ nm lamp produces 150 watt. The 36 inch model has one lamp, and the 48″ and 72″ models have 2 and 3 respectively. These lamps are based of the popular HID lighting technology that is found in higher upscale cars, another technique with the Aquatic Life HID lighting units feature is spot lighting. Originally popular in Europe then made it’s way over in Japan the idea is to spot one part of the reef with high outputs of light and not to totally coat the entire reef with high amounts of life. This allows you to have higher light demanding corals and lower light demanding corals as well. There are of course T5’s included in these lamps, the 36″ model and the 72″ model each get 3 39 watt T5’s while the 48″ model gets 2 54 watts. The 36″ model carries a retail of $599 the 48″ model $799 and the 72″ model $1199.

The 700 nm wavelenght is red, who wants a red light shining over their tank? Also the HID lamps look to be single source and you’ll have to purchase replacements from the manufacturer. I remember Coralife tried to create a propriorty MH lamp and it failed miserably.
