‘LEDs in Action’ is a new mini series from Reef Builders to highlight the importance and potential of LED technology for the home aquarium.

Sure, LED lights are facing the end of the line for the aquarium industry. Who knows how long this legal battle will take and what the results might be. For the rest of us, we can however purchase a nice DIY kit that will allow you to make a great LED lighting system for your reef aquarium. We would like to point out that there are some cavets to this system, including that the lights don’t come with a controller of any kind besides an off/on switch which would have been a bad thing over a year ago, but know it sounds like a good thing with the patent wars raging. Interestingly, the LEDs do not come with their own lenses but rather are rumored to have one large lens. Granted, you can purchase lenses at any optics company if you so desire but with the added additional cost of doing so. These LED DIY kits start at $225 for a 50 watt seup which would make a great science project.

Not much of a website, but the products seem sound. I just ordered 2 of the 144 watt fixtures moments before this was posted.
Here’s the link for Orbitech’s upcoming LED light.
