canon-powershot-d10

You might happen to have a nice SLR camera for taking pictures of your tank along with a photo box of some sort. But Canon’s new Powershot D10 has got us thinking in a whole other direction. The camera although not a SLR is waterproof, plus it is optimized for underwater use…which means that Canon is encouraging you to take it in that glass pool of water you might have. Coming in at a very impressive 12.1 megapixel rating this little guy looks like a mini submarine. Just how waterproof is this guy? Try 10 meters, and its freeze proof up to -10 degrees, shockproof when dropped from a height of 1.22 meters and dust proof. This is Canon’s first designed-for-underwater camera which means you don’t have to worry about those pesky underwater housings. Landing in stores in May of this year for about $330.00 who doesn’t want this guy?

As usual, thay announce a new product right after I buy the older one!

I just bought a new underwater setup, a Canon SD770 and the matching WP-DC23 underwater housing (total from Amazon.com was right at $320 for camera and housing). This setup is waterproof to 40 meters, so it’s able to go pretty deep if you dive. I haven’t tried it out in the tank yet, but will hopefully find some time soon. I also have an older Nikon S5 and a matching Nikon underwater housing for it and have used it for some decent macro shots within my tank (as well as snorkeling while in St. Kitts a couple years ago). And I’m not really too upset, and really would in my case rather have a camera with a separate housing as the camera itself is very small when it’s not in the housing, allowing me to slip it in my travel bag easily when I’m out and about. Though it is nice to see more underwater options coming out.

Check my web site in the future and I’ll post a review of the setup when I’ve had time to try it out and get some photos.
