led-light-panel

There is no question that LED lighting is still a very popular and active subject among reef aquarists, talk to anyone and they will tell you how interested they are in the efficient light emitting diodes. Heck, with as much electricity as our reefs burn up its little wonder.  The PFO lawsuit has put a dent into the available LED products  as of late and it leaves aquarists with dwindling options. However, we are seeing more and more options sneak inside the US and UK markets, one such option is a new Chinese made LED aquarium lighting panel, that uses both blue and white LED’s arranged in a square panel. This LED panel features 16 white LEDs and 16 blue LEDs resulting in a total of 32 LEDs…these LEDs eat up just 40 watts. The panel retails for $145 and you would need to rig up a mounting system of some kind, as when we describe this lighting unit as a panel, it really is just a panel. LED wholesalers is the company carrying this product, anyone brave enough to try this panel out?

No I meant HAHA to Orbitech that even though they put PFO out of business that really wont stop much.

I’ve seen these on eBay. They run on 1 watt LEDS which aren’t great for producing alot of PAR. Certainly won”t be useful for more than soft corals. Price is okay for 1 watt LEDs.

BTW, I think Orbitech’s patent applies more to systems with controllers to change colour spectrum, intensity and timing of lighting rather than anything that uses LEDs.

I bought these LEDs and to be honest with you, I am 100% convinced that this is the way to go ,I am currently running 250 watt metal halides on the right and left side of a 180 gallon reef, I put the LEDS in the center between the halides and was amazed that they are as bright or brighter and produce a very nice white/ blue light , I am seriously considering removing my MH s and replacing them with the LEDS. This is a very good product.

    Hey Tom

did you have to mount it to a heatsink or anything? Or did you just secure the panel on to your canopy? Also how much heat does it produce? thanks!

I have a custom built canopy with a removeable top, it is a simple peg board material for ventilation. The led light panel is easily mounted with four short screws(depending on what your top is made of)The panels produce a small amount of heat but the heat is produced by the panel upward not down like a metal halide. These are very bright lights and definitely can groe sps corals clams and lps which I have all of.

We highly recommend the LED Lighting, the light wavelengths being omitted is very bright and almost all corals will enjoy the added benefit these lights can bring. Of course you will need more panels depending on your configuration and tank set up. For the Reef Hobbyists who loves the D.I.Y projects and who can properly retrofit aquarium apparatus, such as these lighting panels, we do believe it’s worth the money and effort.

tried a few chinese made LED’s and Panels don’t be fooled by this the quality is poor and the reliability is worst. I bought a LED light for night hiking at Big Basin, got 2 for me and wife and end up walking blind that night each one cost about 40 dollars.. if you want to build LED lighting here’s one for those of you who dare.. all good quality made here in the U.S when i bought mine about a year ago.. and trust me these LED’s are the best… check it out
