skimmerWhat’s that? Your protein skimmer is still made from Acrylic aka dead dinosaurs? Tisk tisk. This beauty, aptly named the Mame skimmer Ⅲ (mamesukima) which is produced by MAME Design isn’t just for your average tank. This hand-crafted ’sukima’ is forged out of  high clarity glass and it is designed with the most basic operation features in mind. The MAME protein skimmer III is air pump driven, adjustable with a old fashioned wood stone which is still very efficient for smaller systems and it hangs on the side of your pico tank with a simple bracket. MAME uses only the highest quality limewood airstones and the diminutive in-tank protein skimmer can be run in as little as 4″/10cm of water depth, dang. The image above shows the sukima in a dual configuration which is ideal if your tank is larger than 10 gallons. Mame Design is made in Japan, and as such you are doubtful to find this protein skimmer here in the United States but if someone doesn’t import even a few units stateside, the design would be simple enough to DIY. If your reef aquarium system is smaller than a nano and you don’t mind replacing the wood air stone every 6-8 weeks then be sure to check out this modern take on a classic protein skimmer design. It might be very difficult for DIY. I read an article that only few people in Japan can make these mame skimmer by GLASS. According to the mame HP, this skimmer can handle up to 30Gal, but it might be less. The price is less than $90.

This reminds me of ADA’s glassware. You could probably DIY one out of a large test tube or something.
